Description

The lesson provides students with strategies when adding multiple two-digit numbers.  It instructs students to add by place value, first adding together the ones and then adding together the tens.  It also offers the students the option of adding in groups of ten. Several examples are provided for the teacher to demonstrate for the students, and for the students to practice individually.

Classroom Procedure:

1. Begin by explaining that adding multiple numbers is an important skill that they will use the rest of their lives. Provide an example of multiple numbers that would be added such as a grocery store.
2. While reading the content pages, reinforce place value and give students additional examples of adding multiple two-digit number problems in order to help them practice the new algorithm.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
3. Introduce the notes on add multiple 2-digit numbers. Have students practice problems with and without a tens place value.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Have students practice problems with each of the strategies.
5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually or in pairs to make their spinners and spin their numbers.  Instruct students that they must chose a number from each of the tens place values for their spinner.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students work a few problems at the beginning of the next class to reinforce the algorithm.
8. In closing, ask students to think of a time in their lives when they have or will add multiple numbers.
9. Allow for responses and discussion.
