Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction

  1. Display a fraction addition problem w/like denominators, and a fraction addition problem with unlike denominators. Ask students: What do you see different in the setup of the two problems?
  2. Allow for responses and discussion. Ask students if they know how to transform the unlike- denominator fraction to like-denominator fractions.
  3. Allow for responses and discussion. Introduce LCM and LCD to the students.
  4. Distribute Fractions-Add & Subtract Unlike Denominators content pages. Read and review the information with the students. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  5. Distribute Activity page. Read and review the instructions. Pair students. Distribute colored pencils. You may also ask students to add the fractions and then use a drawing to show the correct answer. Encourage students to work cooperatively.
  6. Once completed, the students share one or more of the drawings with the class.
  7. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses. For extra practice, use the worksheets available from the resources.
  8. Distribute the Homework page. The next day, check and review the students’ responses.
  9. In closing, ask students: What is your favorite fraction and why?
  10. Allow for responses and discussion. Display some of the responses and ask students to add pairs of them as a review. Encourage students to try and do them mentally.
