The lesson helps your students understand various vocabulary related to addition, as well as the symbols plus (+) sign and equals (=) sign.  An included activity sheet gives students a chance to practice writing the addition sentence to go along with their pictures.

Classroom Instruction:

  1. Begin by asking students if there were 4 girls and 4 boys in the class, how many cookies would you need to buy so that each person could have one? Ask how they decided to solve the problem. Lead them towards the word addition or adding.
  2. While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of addition problems in order to help them practice. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  3. Introduce the notes on adding using objects and drawings. Have students practice problems and writing addition sentences. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  4. Have students practice problems as a class.
  5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually and walk around checking for correct answers. Create stories for them to put birds into their trees. For example, one bird flew into the tree and started singing. Two birds heard his song and flow to the tree to sing with him. How many birds in total are singing?
  6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses.
  7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students work one problem so they understand how to complete the page.
  8. In closing, ask students when they have used addition in their own lives.
  9. Allow for responses and discussion.
