This useful lessons provides additional strategies for addition and subtraction. The lesson breaks down both operations using place value, so students should have some familiarity with that concept before the lesson. Block visuals for the place values are also provided. The lesson can be used in conjunction with other lessons relating to multi-digit adding and subtracting.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction:

1. Begin by explaining to students that they will be adding and subtracting numbers with three digits. Ask students if they know the names of the three place values that make up a three digit number.
2. While reading the content pages, reinforce place value and give students additional examples of addition and subtraction problems in order to help them practice the new algorithm. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
3. Introduce the notes on additional strategies for adding and subtracting. Have students practice problems with and without regrouping or carrying.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Have students practice problems and circulate around the room to check that they are correctly setting up their problems.
5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually or in pairs.  Have the entire class solve the problem together and then check for a correct answer.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students work a few problems at the beginning of the next class to reinforce the algorithm.
8. In closing, ask students to explain why it is important that the place value is lined up when solving the problems.
9. Allow for responses and discussion.
