Alzheimer’s Disease


Due to advances in healthcare, people are living much longer in the United States and throughout the world.  In addition, however, the occurrence of Alzheimer’s Disease is more prevalent and students will most likely need to interact with loved ones or others who suffer with the disease.  The lesson helps students learn about the disease, as well as gives strategies to use when interacting with people who have Alzheimer’s.  It may be a sensitive topic for some students, and the teacher must be aware students may need additional intervention, especially if a grandparent or another loved one has begun showing signs of the disease.

As adults are living longer, healthier lives, neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s are becoming more prevalent. The lesson introduces students to the disease so they can be informed should they care for someone who suffers from it. The lessons begins by briefly discussing what physically happens in the brain during Alzheimer’s. Then a list of common symptoms of the disease is provided. Finally, the lesson offers suggestions for activities a child could do with a person who has Alzheimer’s. The lesson concludes by reminding students they can work to prevent Alzheimer’s by staying active and healthy.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction: 

  1. Ask students if they ever forget things, and if a friend or family member becomes mad because of it. Ask how they feel when they forget to do homework, and the next day, the teacher is upset.
  2. Allow for responses and discussion related to the questions. Ask students what they think it would be like if they were forgetting things every hour.  How would they cope with it?
  3. Allow for responses and discussion. Introduce Alzheimer’s Disease.  You may also ask students if they wanted to share an experience with someone who has Alzheimer’s.
  4. Allow for responses and discussion. Tell students they will learn about AD and how it is important to show care and compassion for people who suffer from AD.
  5. Distribute Alzheimer’s Disease content pages. Read and review the information with the students.  Save the final question for the lesson closing.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  6. Distribute Activity page. Read and review the instructions.  Pair students, distribute supplies.  Encourage creativity.  Allow sufficient time for completion.
  7. Once completed, students share posters with another pair of students. Display posters prominently.
  8. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses.
  9. Distribute the Homework page. The next day, check and review the students’ responses.  Students correct the False statements.
  10. In closing, ask students: Besides the list of activities given, what other things could you do to help someone with Alzheimer’s Disease? What would be your favorite thing to do and why?
