This short lesson introduces the students our neighbors to the North and South of the United States.  Many students may be familiar with the countries, but not realize or understand their proximity to the U.S.  The students will be able to locate Canada and Mexico on a map, and correctly identify and match information related to each country.

Description

This short lesson introduces the students our neighbors to the North and South of the United States.  Many students may be familiar with the countries, but not realize or understand their proximity to the U.S.  The students should also be able to locate the countries on a map and list or name some information about each country.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction

  1. Ask students: What is a country?
  2. Allow for responses and discussion.
  3. Ask: What country do you live?  What other countries do you know about?
  4. Allow for responses and discussion.
  5. Ask: What two countries are closest to the United States?
  6. Allow for responses and discussion. Introduce Canada and Mexico.
  7. Distribute Canada and Mexico content pages. Read and review the information with the students.  Display a large North America map to identify each country for the students.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  8. Distribute Activity page. Read and review the instructions.  Distribute scissors, glue, construction paper, glue.
  9. Once students are completed, allow student volunteers to identify Canada and Mexico.
  10. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses.

Great overview for younger students
