Description

Our Changes in Characters Lesson Plan develops critical thinking and reading comprehension as students describe characters in a story and identify how they change based on actions and events in the story.  Generalize understanding by reiterating or introducing vocabulary like protagonist and antagonist, and exploring how a character can evolve into a protagonist with the influence of an antagonist.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Resources Snippet:

  1. Ask students how they each changed between their previous grade level to the current grade level. List the different changes for display.
  2. Ask students to review the list and try to guess why some of their peers made those changes.
  3. Ask: Do you think everyone changes in their life?
  4. Allow for responses and discussion.
  5. Ask: Why is it important to recognize changes in people over time?
  6. Allow for responses and discussion.
  7. Tell students changes take place with characters in a story as well. Introduce Changes in Characters to the students.
  8. Distribute “Changes in Characters” content page. Read and review the information with the students.  Use additional examples and resources to enhance students understanding.
  9. Save the last question of the content page for the lesson’s closing and discussion.
  10. Distribute the Activity page. Review the instructions. Remind students there is only one character who has changed.
