Description

Introduce the concept of main and minor characters to young students with our Characters Lesson Plan.  This engaging lesson prepares students to identify the characters in the story, and tell the difference between the main character and other characters. Strengthen analytical skills as students identify at least one characteristic of a character.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Resources snippet:

  1. Display a list of main characters from books, movies, or TV shows students may have experienced.
  2. Ask students: What do each of the characters have in common?
  3. Allow for responses and discussion. Lead the discussion to the characters being the main person, animal or object in the story, movie, or TV show.
  4. Ask students if there are other characters they are familiar with from books, movies, or TV shows. Tell students all characters are not main characters.
  5. Distribute the Characters content page. Read and review the information with the students, including a focus on the questions in the green box, about the characters.
  6. You will use the final question for the closing of the lesson.
  7. Distribute the Activity pages. Pair students or have them work alone.
  8. Once completed, review the correct matches. Ask students which ones are the main characters of the short stories.
  9. Distribute the Practice page. Do as a class or allow students to work independently.
  10. Check and review the work when completed.
