Just like how we can organize and classify in science, we can organize and classify shapes in math. In this lesson students will be able to classify two dimensional figures based on their properties.They will practice problems using a logical progression with their map.

Description

Just like how we can organize and classify in science, we can organize and classify shapes in math. In this lesson students will be able to classify two dimensional figures based on their properties.They will practice problems using a logical progression with their map.

  1. Begin by explaining to students that just like we can organize and classify in science, we can organize and classify shapes in math.
  2. While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of shapes and their properties in order to help them practice classification. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  3. Introduce the notes on classifying 2D shapes. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  4. Have students practice problems using a logical progression with their map.
  5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually.  Have them cut out the labels.  Sort the shapes and labels as a class to make sure that students correctly glue their pieces in place.
  6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
  7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students check their answers at the beginning of the next class to reinforce the different properties.
  8. In closing, ask students why it is important to classify 2D shapes.
  9. Allow for responses and discussion.
