Description

Our Colons Lesson Plan enhances the writing skills as students are prepared to identify a colon and use colons correctly when writing.  Engage creative thinking as students compose their own sentences with colons and reinforce understanding by reflecting on when and how students will incorporate more colons in their writing.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Resource Snippet:

  1. Hand students two of the large black dots as they walk in the classroom, or while at their desks.
  2. Ask: What do these black circles or dots mean to you?
  3. Allow student responses and discussion.
  4. Lead the conversation to colons, and introduce the lesson with an example.
  5. Distribute the Colons content page. Read and review with students, displaying additional examples for students to better understand their usage.
  6. Distribute the Practice page allowing time for students to complete. Stress the second half of the page can be made up sentences, books, etc.
  7. Once completed, review and check the Practice page allowing students to give their answers.
  8. Distribute the Homework page and review and check the next day, checking for understanding.
  9. In closing, ask students if they think their use of colons will increase, and why or why not?
  10. Allow for responses and discussion
