Community Helpers


The lesson introduces community helpers for students, and also includes information for students to become involved in their community as a volunteer or helper.The students will be able to identify community helpers and describe their roles and duties in a community.

This interesting lesson introduces community helpers for students, and also includes information for students to become involved in their community as a volunteer or helper. Many students may have had a similar lesson in Kindergarten or Preschool, so this could be used as a review to encourage the students to become involved in their communities as they mature.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction

  1. Display various “tools” from a few community helpers and ask students: What do the items have in common? (All are from community helpers.)
  2. Allow for responses and discussion. Ask students tell about a community helper they may know.
  3. Distribute Community Helpers content pages. Read and review the information with the students. Save the final questions for the lesson closing. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  4. Distribute Activity pages (Pages 5-6). Read and review the instructions. Distribute scissors and glue. The students will glue the images to the first activity page.
  5. Distribute final Activity page (Page 7). Following matching activity, allow one student at a time to discuss the duties of a community helper shown on the activity page. Together, the class will list some duties for each of the community helpers, plus may include two others, which can be different for each student. Allow students to share the added helpers and their duties.
  6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses.
  7. Distribute the Homework page. The next day, check and review the students’ responses.
  8. In closing, ask: What can you do today to become a community helper in your neighborhood? If you can choose right now, which community helper would you like to be when you get older?
  9. Allow for responses and discussion. Encourage students to start doing small things in their neighborhood, simply saying hi or talking to a neighbor, etc.
