Engage reading comprehension skills with our Context Lesson Plan as students learn how to use context clues to define unknown words.  Solidify understanding and elevate awareness as students articulate the context clue that helped them define a new word withing the activities.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Resources Snippet:

  1. Distribute a small piece of candy or snack for students to eat. During distribution, make up a word to call the snack. Use the word often. When all students have received and eaten the snack, ask: How many of you enjoyed the ___?  Do any of you have ___ at home?  What is your favorite flavor of ___?
  2. Allow for responses and discussion.
  3. Ask: How would you define ____?
  4. Allow for responses. Ask: How do you know it is the correct definition for ____?
  5. Allow for responses and discussion leading to context clues.
  6. Distribute the Context content page. Read and review with students, emphasizing each of the types of context clues.
  7. Use additional examples for students’ understanding of the concept.
  8. Distribute the Practice page, allow in-class time for completion. Review and check the students’ work. Allow volunteers to share their responses. You may wish to ask which context clue type was used to define the word.
  9. Distribute the Homework page.
  10. Check and review the next day.
