Our engaging Converting Time Units Lesson Plan identifies the basic units of time and demonstrates the operations used to change units of time. Establish understanding of time conversions by reviewing common units of time and challenging students to identify the units in a series of conversion steps.  Additional resources and practice opportunities are available to solidify understanding.

Classroom Procedure Sample:

  1. Display the number: 31,536,000 (seconds in a year)
  2. Ask students to try and guess what the number represents. Allow for responses and discussion. Do not give the answer.
  3. Either using calculators or on paper tell the students to do the following:
    1. Enter or write down 365
    2. Multiply the answer by 24
    3. Multiply the new answer by 60
    4. Multiply again by 60
    5. Students final answer should match 31,536,000
  4. Now ask students to review the numbers they used and to try and guess what the number represents. Answer: Number of seconds in a year.
  5. Ask students what operations they would use to change the number of seconds in a year to number of days. Answer: Division.
  6. Ask students the following questions: (Allow responses until it is answered correctly. These are the basic units of time students must know.)
    1. How many seconds are in a minute?
    2. How many minutes are in an hour?
    3. How many hours are in a day?
    4. How many days are in a week?
    5. How many days are in a year?
    6. How many weeks are in a year?
    7. How many months are in a year?
    8. How many years in a decade?
    9. How many years in a century?(continued)

Class Sessions (45 minutes): 1 or 2 class sessions
