This useful and informative lesson introduces your students to a real world skill they will need throughout their lives, decimal and fraction conversion. Students should have some familiarity with vocabulary related to fractions, such as numerator and denominator, and place value before beginning the lesson. Converting fractions to decimals and the reverse, converting decimals to fractions, are both covered throughout the lesson. The lesson can be used with other lessons relating to fractions and decimals.

Description

This useful and informative lesson introduces your students to a real world skill they will need throughout their lives, decimal and fraction conversion. Students should have some familiarity with vocabulary related to fractions, such as numerator and denominator, and place value before beginning the lesson. Converting fractions to decimals and the reverse, converting decimals to fractions, are both covered throughout the lesson. The lesson can be used with other lessons relating to fractions and decimals.

Classroom Procedure:

  1. Begin by explaining to students that being able to convert from decimals to fractions is an important skill that they will use all their lives.
  2. While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of fraction and decimal conversion problems in order to help them practice.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  3. Introduce the notes on fraction and decimal conversion. Have students practice problems converting from fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  4. Have students explain how they converted from one to the other to a partner.
  5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually or in pairs. Hand out a bag of multicolored pasta to each group.
  6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
  7. Distribute the Homework page.
  8. In closing, ask students to repeat the process for converting decimals and fractions.
  9. Allow for responses and discussion.

Great Resources

We are a home school family and just stumbled across this site. I am amazed at the detail put into the lesson plans along with the worksheets provided for the kids. I would highly recommend this site for your schooling needs!
