### Description

Word problems are everywhere, and the lesson provides your students with steps they can use to solve any word problem.  The lesson provides examples specifically related to numbers with decimals, and offers students real world examples of word problems such as those relating to money and time.  It helps students find key words so they know what operations to use to solve the problem.  The lesson can be used with other lessons about decimals or word problems.

Sample classroom Procedures:

1. Begin by explaining to students that we encounter math in a variety of scenarios, not just in math class. Have them think of places and occupations that use math every day.
2. While reading the content pages, reinforce the steps used to solve a word problem and give students additional examples of decimal word problems.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
3. Introduce the notes on decimal word problems. Have students practice problems with each operation.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Have students practice problems individually and as a whole class.
5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work in pairs.  Allow students to be creative and use various areas for their photos.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students work a few problems at the beginning of the next class.
8. In closing, ask students to list some of the places they brainstormed for their word problems.
9. Allow for responses and discussion.
