Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction Snippet:

  1. Display a whole number and a price on the board with the dollar sign. Ask students to identify differences between the two numbers.
  2. Allow for responses and discussion. Lead students to understand the “cents” for a price is out of 100, corresponding to “hundredths” for decimals.
  3. Distribute Decimals content pages
  4. Review both pages with students, reading aloud during class, with further examples on the board or other display method.
  5. Stress lining up the decimals carefully and neatly.
  6. Distribute practice page and graph paper for horizontal problems.
  7. Review in class, check for students’ understanding of the concepts. Review where necessary.
  8. Distribute Homework page.
  9. Review/collect the next day.
