Students tend to be intimidated by both fractions and word problems, so the more practice they can do with these topics, the more confidence they will gain when it comes to working with these concepts. This lesson reminds students they will use both fractions and the skills they need to solve word problems in real life. The steps for solving word problems and basic steps for working with fractions are reviewed separately as part of the lesson. Description

Students tend to be intimidated by both fractions and word problems, so the more practice they can do with these topics, the more confidence they will gain when it comes to working with these concepts. This lesson reminds students they will use both fractions and the skills they need to solve word problems in real life. The steps for solving word problems and basic steps for working with fractions are reviewed separately as part of the lesson. Classroom Procedure:

  1. Begin by explaining to students that solving fraction problems using basic operations is important, because in real life they will have fraction problems to solve.
  2. While reading the content pages, reinforce word problems strategies and give students additional examples of fraction word problems in order to help them practice.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  3. Introduce the notes on word problems with fractions. Have students practice problems using all of the operations.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  4. Have students practice problems as a whole class.
  5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually or in pairs.  Help students that may be struggling to think about things that a person in that job might have to solve.
  6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
  7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students share one of their problems at the beginning of the next class.
  8. In closing, ask students what was one thing that was the most fun about the lesson.
  9. Allow for responses and discussion.
