Description

Explore the different types of governments with our Government Types Lesson Plan.  Students will be able to define, compare, and contrast the different types of governments, as well as identify their roles in society or a country.  Leverage collaborative learning by assigning each group a type of government to solidify understanding, engage critical thinking and stimulate concept imagery for the functionality of different government types.

Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction Sample:

  1. Ask: Who is in charge at your home, while you are with your friends, or during an event?
  2. Allow for responses and discussion then ask: Who picked the person to be in charge? Are you happy with the people or person in charge? What would you do if someone else was in charge? Do you feel you have a lot of freedom?
  3. Allow for responses and discussion. Ask: What kind of government is in the United States?
  4. Allow for responses and discussion. Introduce to the students the fact that not all countries have the same government as the U.S.
  5. Distribute Government Types content pages. Read and review the information with the students. Save the final question for the closing to the lesson. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  6. Distribute Activity page. Read and review the instructions. Create at least 5 groups, one for each type of government. You will not assign democracy.

Lesson plan in a pinch
