Description

In our interactive Irregularly Spelled Words Lesson Plan, students are introduced to irregularly spelled words.  Students learn how to read and spell common irregularly spelled words accurately and independently, which improves reading fluency and writing.  With ample built-in opportunities for practice, students can identify and strengthen their awareness of irregularly spelled words.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Resources Snippet:

  1. Display a few irregularly spelled words. Ask students what the words may have in common. (For example: would-wood, have-gave, enough-through)
  2. Allow for responses.
  3. Next to the displayed words, list words with the similar spellings, but different sounds. Again, ask what the words may have in common.
  4. Allow for responses and discussion. Introduce irregularly spelled words.
  5. Distribute Irregularly Spelled Words content page. Read and review the information with the students. Use the additional examples and resources to enhance understanding.
  6. Distribute Activity pages. Read and review the instructions. Distribute scissors.
  7. Once students have completed the lists, pair students and allow them to practice pronouncing the words.
  8. Distribute Practice page. Once completed, allow students to share their sentences with a partner and/or with the class.
  9. Distribute the Homework page. The next day, check and review the students’ responses.
  10. In closing, ask students what words they have the most trouble reading and spelling?
