Classroom Procedure Snippet:

  1. Without comment the teacher will be wearing 4-6 layers of shirts, jackets, etc. as students walk into the classroom, or will add the clothing while beginning the lesson.
  2. The teacher will then ask the students: Why do you think I am wearing a number of layers of clothing?
  3. Allow for responses: May include protection, warmth, etc. (The point is to get students thinking about “layers”, leading to the main topic: The Layers of the Earth.)
  4. Introduce students to the topic: The Layers of the Earth
  5. Tell students they will discover the meaning of each of the displayed numbers
  6. Distribute the reading content: The Layers of the Earth
  7. Have students read the information page independently or read aloud as a class.
  8. After reading, ask for student volunteers to go to each of the displayed Number pages and write the meaning of the number.
  9. Once completed, distribute Handout #1: Review Page
  10. Allow students time to complete the handout independently
