Our hands-on mental Math 10 More or Less Lesson Plan engages concept imagery and leverages sensory stimulation to develop mental math skills in young students.  Reinforcing vocabulary, identifying the mental math strategy for adding or subtracting 10, and providing ample practice problems anchors the concept of mental math as an efficient strategy and allows students to develop comfort and skill using mental math.  Solidify understanding as students generalize their skills to common scenarios where mental math is more helpful.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction

1. Begin by reviewing place value of tens and ones (units). Give students several numbers and ask how many tens and how many ones. Ask students to solve 27 plus 10 more. Discuss various strategies they used. Ask students to solve 27 take away 10. Discuss various strategies they used.
2. While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of 10 more and 10 less problems in order to help them practice the new mental math strategy. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
3. Introduce the notes on Mental Math 10 More or Less. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Have students practice problems using the hundreds board until they feel comfortable using mental math.
5. Follow Activity page with students. Cut out cards and label with numbers for your class. Hand one (or more)
cards to each student and play as a whole class.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students mentally work a few problems at the beginning of the next class.
8. In closing, ask students when mental math would be helpful in their lives.
9. Allow for responses and discussion

Used specifically for struggling students.

The overall experience when using Mental Math 10 More of Less was fantastic! I used this lesson with second grade students who were struggling with this concept. This was a great tool to help students visually see 10 More - 10 Less on a hundreds chart.
