Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction

1. Ask: What is easier than adding and subtracting fractions?
2. Allow for responses and discussion. Introduce multiplication and division of fractions.
3. Distribute Fractions/Multiply & Divide content pages. Read and review the information with the students. If necessary, demonstrate more examples of multiplying and dividing fractions. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Distribute Activity page. Read and review the instructions. Pair students. Distribute 3 dice to each pair of students. Remind students to take turns rolling the dice. (Option: Students can use just 1 or 2 dice for some whole numbers or numerators.) Allow sufficient time to complete the activity. Circulate through the room to check for understanding.
5. Once completed, students may exchange the problems with another pair of students to check for accuracy. The use of calculators for checking may be used.
6. Distribute Practice page. Remind students to use additional paper if necessary. Check and review the students’ responses.
7. Distribute the Homework page. The next day, check and review the students’ responses.
8. In closing, ask: What do you like most and least about working with or using fractions?
9. Allow for responses and discussion.
