The lesson identifies and defines each part of a mathematical phrase, including the coefficient, operation, variable and constant. Students are not expected to solve equations in this lesson, just identify various parts of an expression so they can become accustomed to the vocabulary necessary to read and discuss algebra before attempting to solve the equations. The lesson may be used in conjunction with other algebra-related lessons.
- Begin by explaining to students that it is important for us to learn about the different parts of expressions that we can talk about how they work together.
- While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of expressions in order to help them practice the new vocabulary. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
- Introduce the notes on math expressions. Have students practice using their vocabulary to talk about expressions. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
- Have students practice while repeating the vocabulary out loud.
- Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually.
- Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
- Distribute the Homework page. Have students check their work in order to make sure they retained the vocabulary at the beginning of next class.
- In closing, ask students how we would communicate about math if we didn’t have names for the different parts of expressions.
- Allow for responses and discussion.
