The lesson helps students use personification in their writing, as well as identify the use of personification in stories, poems, and other text.  It also discusses the reasons to use personification and how its use will help students become better writers.  There are many additional personification resources for students to access on the Internet.  It is recommended students get the opportunity to read as many examples of personification as possible.  The lesson could be used in conjunction with other writing topics.

Description

The fun and informational lesson helps students understand how to use personification in their writing, as well as identify the use of personification in stories, poems, and other text.  It also discusses the various reasons they may want to use personification and how its use will help students become better writers.  Several interactive links are included so students can access more examples of personification on the Internet.  It is recommended students get the opportunity to read as many examples of personification as possible.  The lesson can be used in conjunction with other writing topics.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction: 

  1. Display 3 examples of personification: The brown grass was screaming for water.  Greed has encouraged many people.  The tree wrapped its arms around the sun.  Ask students:  What do each of the statements have in common?
  2. Allow for responses and discussion. (Responses may include comments related to senses, or other human characteristics.)  Ask students if they can guess what each statement means.
  3. Allow for responses and discussion. Introduce personification.
  4. Distribute Personification content pages. Read and review the information with the students.  Save the final request for the lesson closing.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding and to expose students to other personification examples.
  5. Distribute Activity page. Read and review the instructions.  Encourage students to be creative.  Allow sufficient time to complete the activity. (Option:  Students use personification examples from the Internet to create their own images for Part 3.)
  6. Once completed, students share with the class. (Some responses will vary.)
  7. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses.
  8. Distribute the Homework page. The next day, check and review the students’ responses.  Allow students to read aloud their stories and poems to the class.
  9. In closing, tell students: Use your school or your town in a sentence using personification. Give students a piece of paper or they may read them aloud.
  10. Allow students to share their personification examples related to the school or town.
