Shapes can be classified in a variety of ways.  The lesson describes how triangles can be classified by angles or sides, while parallelograms can be classified using angles or congruent sides.  The lesson defines vocabulary related to the figures like acute and obtuse triangles.  Students are giving ample opportunity with practice and activity sheets to use the new vocabulary to identify and draw shapes and figures.

#### Classroom Procedure:

1. Begin by explaining to students that figures have characteristics that make each of them unique and special just like people.
2. While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of figures and their properties in order to help them practice the new information.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
3. Introduce the notes on properties of figures. Have students practice problems using their notes.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Have students practice problems using the flow chart.
5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually or in pairs to solve the mystery questions.  Copy on colored paper and cut into cards or print on index cards for reusable sets of mystery questions.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students work a few problems at the beginning of the next class to reinforce the flow chart.
8. In closing, ask students to share a unique characteristic about themselves.
9. Allow for responses and discussion.
