The lesson focuses on word problems that deal with rate, a ratio that compares two different types of quantities.  The lesson uses proportions to solve the word problems, and uses a variety of “real world” examples so students will understand that this math lesson is relevant to their everyday lives.

Sample classroom Procedures:

1. Begin by explaining to students that it is important to be able to compare items so that you are not paying too much for equal services.
2. While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of ratio and rate word problems in order to help them practice. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
3. Introduce the notes on ratio and rate word problems. Have students practice problems with whole numbers.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Have students practice problems where they need to set up a proportion and concentrate on helping them place the numbers in the correct position in the proportion.
5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually or in pairs.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students check their work to assess understanding.
8. In closing, ask students to think about times when they have had to compare two items using unit rates or ratios.
9. Allow for responses and discussion.
