### Description

Word problems are all around us.  Students are often intimidated by them, and the lesson helps counter the intimidation by listing simple steps your students can use for any word problem.  Several examples are included so students can practice solving problems using the various methods presented in the lesson.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction:

1. Begin by explaining to students that word problems make up a large portion of mathematics. People who use math in their jobs are solving a problem with something or finding a solution to a problem using math.
2. While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of rational number word problems in order to help them practice the new steps. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
3. Introduce the notes on rational number word problems. Have students practice problems with fractions, decimals, and whole numbers.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Have students practice problems while using each of the four steps.
5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work in groups of four.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students review the problems at the beginning of the next class.
8. In closing, ask students to repeat the four steps used to solve word problems.
