Description

Our Reading Comprehension Lesson Plan enables students to define reading comprehension and use reading comprehension skills to understand given content.  With ample opportunity for ideas sharing and generalization of learned concepts, students develop awareness of what reading comprehension is while strengthening their own reading comprehension skills.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Resources Snippet:

  1. Display two or three sentences. Ask students random comprehension questions related to the sentences. Mix the questions between factual and other types of questions.
  2. Allow for responses.
  3. Ask students if they noticed the difference between some of the questions you asked.
  4. Allow for responses and discussion.
  5. Lead the discussion to Reading Comprehension.
  6. Distribute the Reading Comprehension content pages. Read and review the information with the students, sharing examples with the different types of comprehension skills.
  7. Ask questions to check for understanding.
  8. Accept responses to the final question on the content pages: Why is the dog chasing the cat?
  9. Distribute the Activity page. Review the instructions.
  10. When completed, allow student volunteers to share the 3 to 5 sentences related to the picture. (Responses may vary.)
