Description

Our Reptiles and Mammals Lesson Plan introduces facts that enables students to compare and contrast facts and information about reptiles and mammals.  Students will also be able to name some reptiles and mammals.  Generalize understanding by encouraging group discussion on the mammals and/or reptiles some students may have as pets.

Sample Classroom Procedure:

  1. Display the images of a mammal and a reptile. Ask students: What do you see that is different about the (reptile) _____ and the (mammal) _____? (Do not use the terms reptile/mammal.)
  2. List all of the responses from students and allow time for discussion.
  3. Ask students: What do you see that is alike between the two animals?
  4. List all of the responses from students and allow time for discussion.
  5. Now ask students to name some other animals that might have some of the same listed characteristics of the (reptile) _____ and then the (mammal) _____.
  6. Introduce the terms: Reptiles and Mammals to the students.
  7. Distribute Reptiles and Mammals content page. Students read aloud or independently. Discuss the concepts and stress the differences between each group of animals. Have student volunteers share responses to: Do you have a mammal or reptile for a pet?
