Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction

  1. Display, or give examples to students, price tags of items, a flyer from a store, empty packaging from food products showing decimal weights. Ask students: What do all of the numbers shown have in common with each other?
  2. Allow for responses and discussion. Lead the discussion to decimals.
  3. Ask: If something weighs 2.9 ounces, what whole number is it closest to? If an item costs 89 cents, what dollar amount is it closest to?
  4. Allow for responses and discussion.
  5. Ask why people round numbers such as decimals and dollar amounts. Allow for responses and discussion.
  6. Distribute the Rounding Decimals and Money content pages. Read and review the information. Summarize the place value names for decimals. Use additional examples to enhance student understanding.
  7. Distribute the Activity page. Review the instructions. Once students have completed the work, review and check students’ responses. Allow volunteers to choose their favorite food item and tell its rounded price.
  8. Distribute the Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses.
  9. Distribute the Homework page. The next day, check and review the students’ responses.
  10. In closing, show a video from additional resources to reinforce understanding of rounding decimals and money.
