Description

Introduce the basic parts of a sentence and writing complete sentences with our Sentence Basics Lesson Plan.  Students build on incomplete sentences as a foundation for learning sentence basics.  Then, to generalize their understanding, students apply their knowledge about the parts of a sentence to their written expression.

Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction Sample:

  1. Get the students attention and speak to them for a couple of minutes using incomplete sentences. Say such things as: The door is, Please open, Have you, What is for, I am going to, and more.
  2. After a couple minutes ask students if they noticed something odd about the words you were using or how you were speaking.
  3. Allow for responses and discussion.
  4. Revisit some of the partial sentences and ask students to volunteer some words to make a complete sentence. Introduce the basic sentence to students.
  5. Distribute Sentence Basics content pages. Read and review the information with the students. Include additional examples as you read through the content to give students further practice. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
