Develop math problem solving strategies for young students with our Solving Word Problems Lesson Plan.  This interactive lesson equips students to identify and define keywords and use pictures or diagrams for math problem solving (addition and subtraction).   With collaborative learning opportunities, students work in pairs to compose word problems that incorporate pictures or diagrams and exchange problems with other groups to solve.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Resources Snippet:

1. Use the prepared word problem story to open the lesson. Tell students the information using the objects, etc., on hand.  Ask students how they would go about solving it.
2. Allow for responses and discussion. Display some of their methods.
3. Ask students if they know the difference between solving number sentences solving word problems.
4. Allow for responses and discussion.
5. Distribute Solving Word Problems content pages. Read and review the information with the students.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses.  Allow volunteers to display and share their word problems with pictures or diagrams.
7. Distribute Activity page. Read and review the instructions.  Pair students.
8. Once all students have completed the 6 questions, assign pairs of students to exchange their work with other pairs to solve the problems.
9. Once all students have solved the questions, they will return them to the creators of the problems to correct.
10. Discuss the activity with the class. What was difficult, easy, do differently, etc.

### Good

We recently began homeschooling my son, after learning that he has not been being taught many subjects due to being in self-contained unit at school because of his behavioral issues. After explaining a few things to him, the material really helped to guide him on to the next part in our efforts to get him caught up. Thank you.
