Description

The lesson offers students various strategies to subtract multiples of ten from any number. The strategies include using place value or a hundreds chart to solve the problems. Several examples are provided to enhance students understanding. The lesson may be used in conjunction with other basic subtraction lessons.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction:  

  1. Begin by asking students to write down a number (67) and take away ten. Ask for their strategies on how they subtracted 10.
  2. While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of subtracting multiples of 10 problems in order to help them practice.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  3. Introduce the notes on subtracting multiples of 10. Have students practice problems with each strategy.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
  4. Have students practice problems as a large class.
  5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually.  Increase the level of difficulty based on each individual student’s progress.
  6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
  7. Distribute the Homework page. Check their work at the beginning of the next class.
  8. In closing, ask students to tell you which strategy helps them subtract by multiples of 10 the easiest.
  9. Allow for responses and discussion.
