# Taxes

The lesson introduces students to the history of taxes, the reasons taxes are collected, and the origin of taxes.  It also gives examples of how local, state, and federal taxes are used in societies, their tax responsibility, and a brief explanation of how to figure taxes on retail items.  Though the lesson is intended for grades four through six, it can be easily adapted for younger students.

In this lesson students will be able to draw a number line and identify where a mixed number or improper fraction is located. Students will practice problems with mixed numbers and improper fractions. Students will also practice problems writing the fraction, creating a diagram, and plotting fractions on a number line.

Sample classroom Procedures:

1. Ask:  If you walk into the store with a \$5 bill and want to buy somethings that costs \$4.99, why might you not have enough money?
2. Allow for responses and discussion.  Introduce taxes.
3. Distribute Taxes content pages.  Read and review the information with the students.  Save the final question for the lesson closing.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Distribute Activity page.  Read and review the instructions.  Review the answers with the class.  Point out the high percent of Gross Income going towards taxes, lowers the Net Income, per hour rate, etc.
5. Distribute Practice page.  Do a few examples of changing percent into decimals until students understand.  Check and review the students’ responses.
6. Distribute the Homework page.  The next day, check and review the students’ responses.  Allow students to share their letters with the class.
7. In closing, ask:  What do you think would be the best idea and fair method for people to pay taxes?
8. Allow for responses and discussion.  Give students ample opportunity to share their ideas and suggestions for taxing people in the U.S. fairly.
