Designed for older students, the lesson presents and describes the different kinds of pronouns such as personal, possessive, indefinite, reflexive, and others. The lesson focuses on identifying the antecedent and choosing the correct pronoun to match it. Students are familiar with most personal pronouns since they use them every day when they speak and write, but are not aware there are many other words that can be identified as pronouns. Extra practice is recommended using the additional resources.
Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction:
- List and display one pronoun from each of the 8 pronoun types from the content pages. Ask: What do these words have in common? What is different about each word?
- Allow for responses and discussion. Ask students to use each word in a sentence and if they notice anything different about their use.
- Allow for responses and discussion. Introduce the types of pronouns.
- Distribute Types of Pronouns content pages. Read and review the information with the students. Ask students to share other sentence examples for each pronoun type. Save the last question for lesson closing. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
- Distribute Activity page. Read and review the instructions. Assign opponents. Distribute scissors. Set a specific time-period for students to create the sentences. Each must be 5 words or more. (Make extra copies of sentence page if necessary.)
- Once time is up, review questionable sentences to determine correctness.
- If time, play several rounds to ensure students are using the pronouns correctly.
- Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses. Use the worksheet resources for additional practice opportunities for the students.
- Distribute the Homework page. The next day, check and review the students’ responses. Student volunteers share their 8-sentence stories.
- In closing, ask: Can you write one single correctly written sentence using at least 7 pronouns? Try it. Distribute scratch paper.
