The lesson introduces students to place value and how to read and write large numbers. The lesson also briefly discusses expanded form, and greater than, less than and equal to signs. A place value chart is included so students have a visual reference when writing the large numbers. The lesson can be used in conjunction with other lessons about place value.

### Classroom Instruction:

1. Begin by explaining to students that they will be adding to their knowledge about reading, writing, and comparing numbers by learning about larger numbers.
2. While reading the content pages, reinforce place value and give students additional examples of expanded form problems in order to help them reinforce the new information. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
3. Introduce the notes on understanding multidigit numbers. Have students practice problems writing numbers in word and numeric form.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Have students practice problems as a group to check for understanding.
5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually.  Allow some students to share their answers with the class.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students go over the problems at the beginning of the next class to reinforce place value.
8. In closing, ask students the difference between 407 and 4007.
9. Allow for responses and discussion.
