Leverage concept imagery and sensory stimulation with our engaging Word Problems and Drawings Lesson Plan, which guides students through the strategy of using pictures to understand and solve word problems.  With interactive activities that encourage students to physically act out word problems, students connect language to movement and pictures as a bridge to identifying and solving the underlying math problem.  Students also engage in peer learning as they create word problems for the class to solve.

Sample Classroom Procedure / Teacher Instruction

1. Begin by explaining to students that drawing a picture can help you understand different problems from language arts to history and even in math class.
2. While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of word problems in order to help them practice the new strategies. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
3. Introduce the notes on word problems and drawings. Have students practice problems by drawing pictures. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Have students practice drawing word problems as a whole class.
5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work as a whole class to act out the word problems.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.
7. Distribute the Homework page. Check the answers at the beginning of the next class and have a few students show how they solved a problem.
8. In closing, ask students if they can come up with a word problem for the class to solve.
9. Allow for responses and discussion.
