# Word Problems, Two Step

Students are often intimidated by word problems, especially two-step.  This lesson focuses on organizing these problems into their various parts and determining the operations needed to solve each part.  Several examples are provided for the teacher to do along with the students, including problems with real world applications, for example, figuring out how to split up a bill at the end of a dinner out. Several practice sheets are included with the lesson, including a suggested homework assignment and quiz to check understanding.

The lesson offers strategies for solving word problems that require two steps. It suggests students break the problems down into two parts and rewrite it in their own words before solving each part. The lesson offers several examples for teachers to work through with their students. The lesson can be used in conjunction with other lessons about word problems.

Sample Classroom Procedures:

1. Begin by explaining to students that many times word problems cannot be solved in just one step.
2. While reading the content pages, reinforce vocabulary and give students additional examples of two step word problems in order to help them practice solving one piece and using it to find the solution. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
3. Introduce the notes on two step word problems. Have students practice problems with all four of the operations.  Use the additional resources to enhance understanding.
4. Have students practice problems using the model as a class.
5. Follow Activity page with students. Have students work individually or in pairs to create their own word problems using the images provided.
6. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students’ responses as a class.  Write the different ways students solved the problems on the board to show that there are many correct ways to solve a problem.
7. Distribute the Homework page. Have students share their problems with the class and solve them together.
8. In closing, ask students if they have ever had to solve a two-step problem in their own lives.
9. Allow for responses and discussion.
